^An immature bird with streaked breast.

I really like these beautiful hawks. With their reddish breasts and dazzling black-and-white striped wings and tail, they add color to the cottonwood groves. In Oasis Valley these noisy hawks can be heard calling their loud piercing "EAR, EAR, EAR, EAR..." cries most times of the year, although I see them less in spring. They are sporadic and wandering, so I do not see them in our area all the time. Red-shouldered hawks hunt in wooded areas and marsh edges, even trying to grab crayfish and frogs out of shallow pools. Their breeding stronghold is in california and the eastern U.S., but a few nesting records are probable from Nevada, places such as Pahranagut Valley east of our area.
