Bird Impacts Loom at Wind Project in the Desert

January 31, 2014 - Ocotillo, CA - Recently these photos were taken at the unpopular and destructive Ocotillo wind project in the western edge of the Imperial Valley, in a migration corridor for bird species. Despite opposition from local residents who value the beautiful desert, and environmental advocates who warned of the high potential for bird slaughter, the wind turbines were built in the midst of Colorado Desert habitat full of wildlife and ocotillo forests, next to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. Below, photos of a Red-tailed hawk and two Turkey vultures soaring dangerously close to the rotor blades. All photos by Jim Pelley.
