^An immature heron looks down from a high perch in a big cottonwood tree.

These herons seem to be spring and fall migrants through Oasis Valley, stopping at ponds, marshes, and riparian groves. They breed in Nevada at places like the Virgin River and Colorado River in he south, and Ruby Marshes, Humboldt River and the Lahontan Basin in the north. Post-breeding summer wanderers are also seen in our area.
