American pipits are cool-season and winter residents of Oasis Valley, arriving here in September and leaving in April. They mostly walk and fly around in the riverine saltgrass meadows, marsh edges, gravel bars, and alkaline flats, alone or in small groups. They breed only on high-altitude alpine tundra, such as in the Sierra Nevada of California and the Colorado Rockies, but also on Mount Charleston south in Clark County, and scattered ranges of northern Nevada.
